Jr. ACT-SO Student News

On October 9th, Jr. ACT-SO students and parents participated in the Kids Care2 Program as part of a Day of Service at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in Naperville, IL.

Loaves and Fishes has been a beacon of hope in DuPage County for over 33 years providing support to families struggling with food insufficiency. Last year alone, Loaves and Fishes assisted 18,798 individuals and 4,789 families with food, health care and other social services to alleviate barriers to self-sufficiency.

The Kids Care2 Program is tailor made for young volunteers to teach them about hunger occurring right in their community. Jr. ACT-SO students were first given a brief orientation on the history of the Loaves and Fishes organization, they were then provided with information about the variety of people that receive service at their facility, followed by guidance on how they as students can make an impact by volunteering and helping to raise awareness about the services offered by Loaves and Fishes.  The Jr. ACT-SO students were then given a tour of the food pantry and concluded the day by celebrating their collective efforts in packing 180 bags of food for pantry patrons.

Jr. ACT-SO families took great pride in presenting Patrice and James Lia, Founders of the Kids Care2 Program, with the 186 pounds of food and personal care items that they collected. The Jr. ACT-SO Day of Service at Loaves and Fishes was a wonderful learning experience for all. We hope to have the opportunity to be able to incorporate community service in the Jr. ACT-SO Program again next year.

We are beginning what we anticipate will be another successful Jr. ACT-SO Program for 2017-18. We are encouraging parents whose child was in the program last year to register their child for this year’s program if the student is in the 7th or 8th grade. We also need ACT-SO and DuPage County NAACP members to tell their friends and associates about Jr. ACT-SO. We have found that “word of mouth” has proven to be a more effective student recruitment tool than a recruitment flier.

We look forward to seeing parents and students at the September 16, 2017 Registration and Orientation Meeting at Glenbard South High School (23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn, Il) in Room 308 from 12:00 – 1:30 PM, if the student has not been registered and/or the parent has not attended a Registration and Orientation Meeting. The first Jr. ACT-SO Student Enrichment Meeting will also be held the same day from 2:00 – 5:00 PM.

In addition; we are still looking for volunteer team coaches and technical mentors. Please contact John Pritchard (630) 904-4599 or Mrs. Leslie Ford (312) 399-3077 if you would like to volunteer or would like more information about these volunteer positions.
