Our Mission

The ACT-SO program is intended to be a learning experience, first and foremost.

TIMELINE

1978

    • ACT-SO founded by renowned author and Chicago journalist Vernon Jarrett. NAACP becomes national sponsor.

1979

    • DuPage County ACT-SO Program founded by Dr. Ernest Gibson, president of DuPage County Branch NAACP and College of DuPage administrator.
    • COD becomes a local sponsor.

1980

    • 1st local competition held - chairperson Rose Thompson

1994

    • Sadie Flucas, COD administrator, is appointed chairperson. She sets the stage for an era of national prominence

1999 – (1)

    • First national medal—a bronze in Instrumental/ Classical by Colie Latin

2001 – (3)

    • Vocal Contemporary – bronze, Computer Science – gold, Playwriting - silver

2002 – (4)

    • Mathematics – gold, Physics Electronics – gold, Physics Energy – bronze, Computer Science - gold

2003 – (3)

    • Music Composition – bronze, Physics General – silver, Comp. Science  – silver

2004 – (1)

    • Music Composition – gold

2006 – (2)

    • Entrepreneurship – bronze, Oratory – gold

2007 – (2)

    • Biology/Microbiology -  silver, Entrepreneurship - silver

2008

    • National ACT-SO competition in Orlando.  DuPage County leads the parade down Main Street USA

2009 – (2)

    • Chairs: Jackie Mayo/Dorletta Payton
    • DuPage ROE becomes a local sponsor
    • Physics – bronze, Architecture - gold

2010 – (6)
